Mattress firmness explained

How to interpret soft, medium and firm mattress labels.

Firmness describes how hard or soft the sleep surface feels, but brands do not use one universal measurement system. Body weight and sleep position also change perceived firmness. Use firmness labels comparatively, then look for independent testing or a meaningful home trial when possible.

Source standard. Product features and policy terms are attributed to the merchant where relevant. Independent testing is identified as third-party testing. We do not claim hands-on experience unless explicitly stated.

What to compare before you buy

Feel

Construction & firmness

Decide whether you prefer foam contouring or coil-supported bounce, then compare the firmness of the exact model.

Fit

Sleep position

Side, back and stomach sleeping create different pressure and support needs, and body weight changes perceived firmness.

Terms

Trial & warranty

Check current trial windows, return conditions, fees and warranty exclusions before purchase.

A simple decision rule

Choose the mattress that meets your most important fit requirements at a price and policy you are comfortable with. If two models are close, prioritize construction and firmness over extra marketing features. Verify current merchant specifications before ordering.
